Movie Games and Game Movies

Chinatown
I wrote this first bit as a comment to Aric’s “Jaws Unleashed” post below. I’m pulling it out here to try to generate some chatter:

Sadly, Jaws Unleashed is part of a larger pattern in current games of mining older movies for their videogamability. Witness The Godfather, The Warriors, The Great Escape, Scarface, and From Russia With Love. I’m genuinely excited about the latter, and don’t give enough of a shit about the Warriors to feel one way or the other. Scarface can only be less fun than GTA Vice City, and turning The Godfather into a video game is an abomination unto the Lord.

Let’s make some predictions. What old movies will be turned into video games? I’m asking for serious predictions, so save “Ernest Scared Stupid” for another time.

Mine:
Chinatown
The French Connection
Bullitt
Dirty Harry or The Good the Bad and the Ugly or The Outlaw Josey Wales

So, whaddaya think, WayIPlayers?

Uwe Uwe. Why you buggin? On a related note, I read on 1up the other day that German director Uwe Boll has been tapped to direct a film based on the hyperviolent Postal series of PC games. Boll is the man responsible (liable?) for the awful adaptations of video games House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark (the latter a Christian Slater / Tara Reid vehicle!).

A look at his upcoming filmography is instructive: Bloodrayne, Dungeon Seige, Fear Effect, Far Cry. Why, it seems that Boll is in a race with Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator) for who can make the most shitty movies based on video games.

Last year Warner Bros. announced a new policy in which a video game company could be penalized for “damaging the brand” if the game based on a movie gets poor reviews. This was supposedly in reaction to the deservedly bad reviews of Enter the Matrix and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness (never mind that Tomb Raider was Eidos’ brand to begin with). What if the game companies held movie studios to the same standards? Are there any video game movies that really HELPED their brands? Mortal Kombat, maybe. Tomb Raider, maybe. Wait, oh yeah: Pokémon.

Also in the news this week: Microsoft has been shopping around the Halo movie with a stipulation that the studio that produces it must stick to Bungie’s “Bible” of plot and character for the franchise. This is a savvy move on Bungie’s part — here’s hoping the stipulation stands and that the film doesn’t land in Uwe or Paul WS’s inbox.

UPDATE: When I was looking for video-game-based movies on IMDB, I found a lot that are in the works that I didn’t know about. Here’s a list of those, for you all to shake your head over: Carmen Sandiego, Crazy Taxi (what?), Deus Ex, Doom, Driver, Metroid, Silent Hill, Spy Hunter, Tekken.

The HD Error

Nintendo Revolution

Nintendo recently announced that their upcoming system, the Revolution, will not support high definition video. You will be unable to see Mario jumping around at 720p in Mario Party.

Nintendo is marching to the beat of their own drum. While Microsoft and Sony try to outdo each other on the exact same field, Nintendo seems to be playing catch alone in their own backyard. A very large, creative, and well kept backyard.

Let’s all raise our right hands. Got them up? Good. You have five digits on that hand. With only your five available fingers, count the number of 16 year olds that have purchased HDTVs with the money they have saved from clerking at Walgreens.

Don’t get me wrong. HDTV is fantastic! It looks crisp and clear. The widescreen brings another level of immersion to gameplay. But it Nintendo really loosing any ground by not supporting it? You already have large systems that are shouting claims from the tops of their respective mountains. You’re not going to beat them in a shouting match. Better to turn heads by eating flaming swords in your mountainous monk sanctuary.

Nintendo is going to be just fine. The video game industry could use some new and creative ideas. While the Playstation and Xbox are going simply for bigger and better, Nintendo is going for different and fun. It may be a next generation counsel, but it will be in a league of it’s own.

RAGE ENGINE RESEARCH, NOT SMASH!
Posted on 06.14.05 by Maxim @ 12:04 pm

One of the leaders of The Anti-Hero Defamation League is The Rage Engine. Since the League is young, Rage decides that some bylaws should be made up so as to guide The AHDL towards the shining light of justice. Rage lumbers into the den located in the basement of the AHDL HQ with the intent to do some research into bylaws.

Ever since his transformation from mild mannered Brad Feukema into The Rage Engine, some basic brain functions have become increasingly difficult for him.

…while some concepts seem fairly elementary to our dear Rage Engine…

Since technology made him the way he is (specifically his Uncle’s ray guy experiment), Rage figures maybe this funny beige box of circuits will help him research bylaws. Of course, the computer crashes. Rage takes it poorly.

Too mad to continue, Rage smashes his way to the AHDL fridge and makes himself a smoothie. Halfway through the smoothie, Rage realizes he doesn’t even know what a bylaw is anyway.

The Hug Doctor

Just a quick note to let you know that Maxim and I have become quite addicted to City of Heroes. If you’re ever on the Virtue server, say hi! We’ll be the guys in The Anti-Hero Defamation League.

Gotta go. The Hug Doctor has some more work to do.

PSP not just for the discerning gamer
Posted on 06.10.05 by A 47 Danger @ 10:00 am

Daddy Day Care

UMDs. Let’s talk about them. Watching movies on the PSP is fantastic. There is something about that tiny screen that makes the movies seem so crisp and clean. The colors so bright and vibrant. The widescreen so perfect.

Would anyone pay more than $5 for a UMD? I guess so. Would I pay $30 for Kill Bill when I could get it for $15 on DVD? No. No I would not. Why would you ask me that? That’s ridiculous!

But people are buying UMDs. I want to shake them hard. “Do you see what you’ve done,” I would scream at them. I will rub their nose in a UMD copy of Daddy Day Care. “First off, you made this thing exists. Second off, you made it cost $15,” I’d explain to them in my loudest outside voice possible.

The PSP is a fantastic system and I love that movies are available for it. These prices are outrageous though! I’m not getting 5.1 surround sound. I’m not getting a high definition display. So why would I pay Best Buy in gold bricks for a UMD of a move I already own?

This is about supply and demand. We can’t take this crap! We can’t go out and buy just anything! Think of your fellow PSP owners! If we all hold out, they won’t be able to charge these outrageous prices.

If I had to take a guess, I’d imagine that the people buying these UMDs are the same people that buy games without reading the reviews. “Suckers” as I’ve come to call them. If I was a carnival worked, I might call them a “rube.” I am not a carnival worker.

They buy Simpsons Skateboarding because of the title, lap up every fighting game even though the controls sucks, and purchase Daddy Day Care for $15 so they can watch it as they fall asleep on their waterbed.

This is a call to action. If you see someone at a store picking up a UMD, slap it out of their hands. Their grip may be tight, so you might need to give their wrists a little karate chop. Don’t feel bad, it’s for their own good. You’re doing them a service. Hell, you’re doing a service to the country. And if you need to, search their home without a warrant. For America. Tie them to a tree, collect their UMDs, and make them watch as you burn them one by one. It may be harsh, but they’ll understand in time. It’s all about the greater good. You are a good person.
