Link has been lost in time. No ocarina can save this Xmas season.
I’m for more development time. A polished game is always worth the extra time. There is no use rushing out a buggy and flawed game to make a deadline. You don’t get anything out of a rushed release. Actually, you do. You get screwed. But that’s not an object. You can’t hang it on your wall. You just walk funny for a couple days. Because your wallet is lighter. Stay with me people. Keep your dirty thoughts to yourself. Release dates seem much too harsh. With each gaming store trying to get the drop on when the prospective game will come out, it’s hard to keep the wolves at bay. Gamers want something they can mark on their calendars. Game studios either need to ignore the cries of fans completely or gamers need to give developers a break. Both would be dandy too. Unrealistic expectations have been set up as the standard. This call is to everybody. Just chill out. Drink some herbal tea, read a book, and calm down. Everything is going to work out fine. The game industry will keep chugging along. I swear they will. Even if you don’t check for the newest screenshots on IGN.com every single day, that doesn’t mean the game process has stopped. I promise. Everything will be alright, baby. Trust big daddy. Filed under: A 47 Danger and GameCube and Rant Comments: None |

On Saturday our group visited the Ginza district around lunchtime, and made a stop at the Sony building. The building has a winding showroom for their higher-end electronics, spanning several stories. One of those stories is devoted to new & upcoming Playstation 2 and PSP games, and it is there that sparklepony (hey Kim; you need a profile) and I got to try out Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy. We played a 2-player co-op level set in one hallway of a school. The controls for two take a moment to adjust to, but we found it remarkably easy to learn and to intuitively know which way we were moving our Katamari. From time to time we had to verbally coordinate our movements, like “let’s get turned around and go back,” or “make a left at the front of the room” or “ooh, we’re taking walls down now — let’s clean out the next room.” The goal is 5m, and we reached that quickly, more quickly than I expected. The level was pretty small, and wraps: if you go out the doors at one end of the hall, you come in the other. There was a side hallway too, but it was blocked by buffalo that we weren’t big enough to get past. Anyway, it was bitchin’ fun, and it looks like the game will feature more of what made the first one great. Joe and I picked up the soundtrack as well — more on that later. The crap train keeps on rolling for the PSP. Sub-sub-par 3rd person platformer Death Jr. comes out this week. Don’t worry about getting your copy at the local GameStop. You can have the one I won’t be buying. The PSP seems to have hit their downward slump very quickly. It’s like a scene from a zombie movie. The hero is throwing everything they can find at the zombie, but nothing seems to stop it. We’re getting so many games that are just lame, it’s like the developers are looking for something they hope will hit. Coded Arms, Dead to Rights, Smart Bomb, Rengoku. Where are our good games? Lumines? Yeah, I bought that a long time ago. What else do you have for me? Is there seriously nothing good coming out until Burnout Legends at the end of September? Let’s look at the release dates. Hmmm, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, game, UMD, UMD… I’m starting to see a pattern here. The DS will finally be hitting their stride this fall, delivering many anticipated games including Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. I see the PSP slipping behind. It’s a much better system, but the games aren’t there. That’s a weird thing to say about a Sony system, isn’t it? Filed under: A 47 Danger and PSP and Rant Comments: None |

My foot has come down. Madden 06 will go unpurchased by me. No matter how many sky high hopes I have of working through years of a franchise, my hopes fall out of the sky like a duck with no wings and a belly full of gold. How the gold filled wingless duck got into the sky, we’ll never know. It makes no sense. Just like me purchasing a Madden game. Don’t get me wrong. Madden games are pretty fun. Lots of strategy. Quick action. They look great. They’re the same every year. Wait, what’s that? They are the same every year? Huh. I guess that’s sort of true. Some things are added every year, but it’s the same basic game over and over again. Maybe you’re just one of those people who buy the newest game just so you can listen to the newest EA Trax. I hope that’s a joke. I hope there are people out there that don’t do this. How many times can you enjoy American Idiot while picking a play. My faulting of the game has nothing to do with Madden himself. I love that crazy old guy. It would be nice if he went off topic like he does in his actual broadcasts. I remember an extended period of time that he talked about what a stoop was. A stoop. Guys were still playing football, but Madden was talking about hanging out on a stoop. It was great. Overall, the Madden games bore me. I can’t sit down every so often and play through an entire season. It doesn’t work that way for me. Especially when they try and sell me the same reheated crap every year. I’m sick of hamburgers, EA. Sell me a steak, and then we might be talking. Let’s talk about Q*bert. Doris Self, age 80, was the Q*bert world champion in 1984. She wasn’t 80 then. She’s 80 now. I’m not about to do math for you. Do it yourself. I’ll imagine how old she is. Yep, still old. Her title taken away from her a year later, she is back to claim the crown once more. Doris will be trying for a score of 1.8 million points. Old ladies aside, I loved Q*bert. That’s right, everything comes back to me. I am ever so important. I remember playing it at the local Chuck E. Cheese. When I could take myself away from those singing robots, I would play Q*bert. I was too young to remember what age I was. Years and years later I got a copy of Q*bert for the PSone. To my surprise, I had trouble clearing the first level. Was this the Q*bert I remembered without the rose colored glasses? It dawned on my that, as a child, I had never once cleared the first stage in Q*bert. I loved the character, the bouncing snakes, those little frisbees that took you to the top if you could ever jump on them without falling off, and the cartoon swearing. It wasn’t the actual gameplay of Q*bert I loved so much. It was the elements of the game. The dirty little orange sack that jumped around. Ending this on a non-self centered note. Go, Doris! Go go go! Beat those young whipper snappers! Filed under: A 47 Danger and Classic and General Comments: None |

Well, ClackyJ, sparklepony and I all just got back from a weeklong trip to Tokyo with five other people, which was excellent. We have plenty of game-related stuff to blog about. Our group came back with 2 Nintendo DSes (one red, one pink), 3 GBA games (all Japan-only Famicom Mini titles), 4 DS games, 3 game soundtrack albums, and 2 PSP games. I’ll let Joe tell you about Osu! Tatake! Ouendan (Go! Fight! Cheer Squad) and Jump Superstars. And I’m sure one of us will write about Akihabara and the arcades and The Typing of the Dead. And I know I have some choice words for the Nintendo Game Front on Odabai (the Island of Lies). But for now, I want to report on our encounters with Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy.
