I'm gonna have to vote for Half-Life 2.

Wow...what a lousy ending.

Both Half-Lives had pretty unsatisfying endings, the first in particular.

Don't take this to mean I've made it through Ravenholm in HL2 -- I skipped ahead to the citadel so I could play with the organic gravity gun.

My vote is for the original Jak & Daxter. Once you actually beat the end boss, the professor guy tells you he found a Precursor Gateway, but he needs all the Precursor Orbs (the game's "hidden in obscure and hard-to-reach places" collectible) in the game to open it.

Once you go back through the levels to collect every last orb, the moment finally comes to open the Gateway. After much to-do, the gate is opened and the game ends on a shot facing the characters looking into the Gateway saying "it's so beautiful!"

The game ends literally as soon as the doors open, and no mention is ever made of what exactly you just wasted the last several hours of your life for. If you listen really closely, you can hear the developers laughing over the ending credits.

Oh, here is the pic my friend took of level 0.

I had an audience. One of which was my Galaga coach/first player. I could never get very far playing as first player.

Galaga. I played for a couple of months at my neighborhood pub on a mission to finish it. Many beers later I'm greeted with level 256. It says level 0. You are still there, and can still shoot, but there are no enemies. Oh, and by the way, after about 985,000 points it no longer keeps your score, so you can't put your name in. It crashes, and you have to tell the guys working at the bar that you broke their machine & they have to unplug it.
