I was going to chip in my 2cents worth, but it would seem Wil has beat me to it word for word almost. So I'll just repost his text...

Planescape: Torment has long been my personal favorite. I also dearly love the Fallouts. Morrowind is also great.

Bethesda Softworks, makers of the Elder Scrolls games (including Morrowind) are currently working to release TES4: Oblivion. However they have already secured the rights and announced their intent to develop Fallout 3. I know of no other game studio that I trust to treat me right with Fallout.

And to reiterate - Planescape: Torment.

I gotta give it to X-Com: UFO Defense. I enjoy that game so damn much. It's fun, addictive, challenging (but with a nice learning curve), compelling, and scary.

Honorable mentions to TIE Fighter and Civilization II (III and IV have each improved upon II in small ways, but II was such a step beyond the first game, and was SO addictive and so much fun, it gets the glory. Kind of like SimCity 2000, although I liked SimCity 3000 better.).

In the past several years, I've finally picked up some classics I'd overlooked in the PC Gaming heyday: Fresspace 2, System Shock 2 and Fallout. All are excellent. Unlike X-Com, all run easily in Windows XP.

I'll second the Planescape nomination. There were more influential games (Civilization) and games that sold more copies, (Quake, Half-Life) but none that were better, in the end.

I have yet to play Call of Duty 2, but the first Call of Duty is one fantastic game. The sound and visuals and score and gameplay and enviroments and everything worked so well together.

I would say Homeworld. You have to understand that I purchased 2 Diamond Monster II's in SLI mode just so I could play that and Freespace 2 at 1024x768 (around November 1999).

The story, the book that told the history, the music, and actual gameplay were all amazing.

Top 5:
1. Homeworld
2. Freespace 2
3. Call of Duty 2
4. Warcraft III
5. Hitman
