Morning, all! I come this morning to tell you some very unfortunate news. I fear that the Wii may not be all it’s cracked up to be. “How can I say this?”, you ask. Easily. I rented Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. This game is the one that’s supposed to really utilize motion sensor and the freedom of both controls. It doesn’t. I can’t say I disliked the game, it is rather enjoyable, but for the PS2. I found the Wii-mote and the Nunchuk to be unresponsive and sluggish. What used to take about .5 seconds to do a combo now took close to 3 seconds. This gave your opponent plenty of time to block. The fact that all the special moves were done by holding the B button and flailing your arms about also became futile. In the off chance that the “special” moves worked, you had to be far enough away (but not too far) from your opponent for it to be effective. This only happened once every 15 times or so. The game itself is a reiteration of the PS2 version. That means it was exactly the same, save for the motion sensing. Nintendo, I am disappointed by you. I am so hoping that the Wii can support games that can take advantage of the motion controllers without becoming frustrating and bothersome. So far, I feel that the list for those games are going to be very few and far between. *I am not going to give this game any stars as it’s not worthy on the Wii. I suggest you find the budget title for the PS2 and get that. It’s worth the $10 dollars. Filed under: Rant and Review and Wii and skintari Comments:

Yeah, it sounds like the Wii version’s only saving grace is that you can play it with a Classic or Gamecube controller to make it essentially the same as the PS2 version. So if one has a Wii but not a PS2 and wants to play MK: Armageddon, they’re in luck.
I think Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Wii did a decent job of incorporating, optionally, again, if I remember correctly, the motion controls. The game played fine, and was great if you wanted more of the X-Men Legends formula.

It’s not really Nintendo’s fault, it’s stupid developers. I think the beauty of the Wii is its ability to be either a standard console with a standard controller, or a party console that will interest even non-gamers. It’s developers who may doom the Wii by releasing games that should be controlled by a controller and are instead controlled in a gimmicky way by the wiimote. Fighting games should never ever ever be controlled by a motion sensing device, it’s just a horrible idea.

There are a few games that do a great job with the new technology. Good examples are Elebits, Rayman, and hopefully Mario Party 8. But they are short lived experiences. Outside of Zelda, there really isn’t a Wii game that you can “sink your teeth into”.
Armageddon could have been a great fighter. If the game was made with the casual gamer in mind and not someone that was already familiar with the MK battle system. A few flicks of the wrist should have gotten most of the moves to react, but it didn’t. And that was my point. Coulda been so much more.
And I know it’s the devs that can make or break a system (right Sony?), but Nintendo has really left me feeling empty with the lack of original games. I haven’t tried Paper Mario (that’s totally my fault!), but it’ll be almost a year from when the system released till Metroid Prime comes out.
