GameCube
It occurred to me this weekend that I have not bought a single GameCube game released in 2005. Not a one. And I’d hazard to guess that, excepting Resident Evil 4, which was a 2004 release that got delayed to early January ‘05, neither have my WayIPlay colleagues.

That makes me sad. I like the GameCube. I like that it has (much) shorter load times and the potential for cleaner graphics than the Playstation. My game-buying behavior this year has avoided multiplatform games that were also released on the Cube, but I will say this: if I decide to buy Timesplitters 3, LEGO Star Wars or X-Men Legends 2 (all selections I have considered), I’ll go the GameCube route.

This is my plea to fellow gamers: if a game you want is released on multiple platforms including the GameCube and there isn’t an online mode that you plan on taking advantage of, or a significant control-related issue (see Mega Man Anniversary Collection), remember the poor little purple box. It’s been so reliable… why not do it a favor?

Homework? Not until you play your video games.

All of us here at WayIPlay are big fans of Katamari Damacy and its beautiful sequel. Over the weekend, I collected the last of the Prince of Cosmos’ cousins in said sequel, and then completed the cousin-collecting bonus stage, effectively “winning” the game again. This in turn unlocked the infamous “Million Roses” challenge.

For those not in the know, the million roses challenge involves playing levels in which the only things you can roll up are individual roses and bunches of 10. Play is untimed, and whenever you want to stop, your progress is recorded so you can come back later to work towards the ultimate goal of collecting one million of the damned things.

This level serves as a tough lesson in orders of magnitude the likes of which the average person never has reason to learn. I’ll put it this way: I played for about a half-hour, and rolled up 10,000 roses. At that point, I am only one percent finished. So I would have to do that 99 more times, or approximately 49.5 hours(!) to reach the goal. That’s longer than it reportedly takes to complete all the required missions in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

As it is, I am satisfied with We Love Katamari without collecting a million goddamned roses. I have one present left, and a host of stages I could refine by unlocking the shooting star reward for quick completion. And to be able to roll up the King of Cosmos himself in the “Make a Star 5″ level would be infinitely more rewarding than the roses ever could.

All that aside, getting the last cousin allows me to move on to my next video gaming task: finishing Ico. Once I do that, then I’m allowing myself to start Shadow of the Colossus.

Where San Andreas, The Minish Cap and Advance Wars DS fit into this plan, I haven’t the foggiest idea.

Another day, another $372,000 in damage
Posted on 09.22.05 by beuks @ 12:00 pm

I’ve been playing Burnout Legends the past few days, going through the Tour and Crash modes, unlocking new events and cars. And unfortunately, it’s started to feel like work. It’s highly addictive work, but at the same time that I feel compelled to play another round, I feel somehow obligated to do so.

This is heightened by the need to replay even nominally successful events. In several of the crashes, while a high dollar figure is not difficult to achieve, a high ENOUGH figure is elusive. I’m pretty sick of replaying Fear Factor and Paradise Peril levels trying to chase the gold medal. I’ve gotten within a couple dozen thousand dollars on each, and would like very much to move on.

This is compounded by the fact that, while Legends is widely described as a “Best of Burnout” game, it is pretty much Burnout 3, minus crash multipliers, plus the unfun Pursuit mode from Burnout 2. So the crash mode is all the same levels I slogged through a year ago on my PS2, and I never had as much fun with those as I did with Burnout 2’s glorious, wide-open crash events (in which it was not uncommon to do more than $50M in damage).

So, if you like Burnout a Whole Hell of a Lot or haven’t played Burnout 3 and own a PSP and are looking for decent games for it, check out Legends. Otherwise, if you have any questions, I’ll be hard at work playing the Leap of Faith crash until I can break $600k.

Why Sony cannot and should not win the portable gaming market
Posted on 09.17.05 by beuks @ 11:11 pm

I bought Burnout: Legends tonight. Looking forward to playing it, I popped it into my PSP. After the PSP loading screen, it said:

“To start you must update the system software.”

Ok, fair enough. Out to the main menu. Find the System 1.52 update.

“The AC adapter is not attached. Please attach the AC adapter, and then try again.”

Alright, you’re throwing up a lot of barriers, but I’ll dig it out and hook it up.

“The battery is low. Please charge the battery, and then try again.”

Fuck you, Sony, I’m going to play Go! Fight! Cheersquad.

PALOM AND POROM!This is the one I’ve been waiting for:

Nintendo will release Final Fantasy IV for the GBA in December

Appropriately enough, GameSpot this week added FFII (IV) to their list of The Greatest Games of All Time.

I’ll definitely be ready this winter to shed a tear for Palom and Porom and laugh at the femmy antics of the Spoony Bard. Only problem is that Gamespot’s thing had me all excited to dust off my Playstation version of FFIV. Now it’ll just seem like wasted effort.

UPDATE! 9/16/05 1:30AM HOLY CRAP #2!
hyperkinetic rabbity thing Sam and Max have been resurrected by the team that was supposed to be doing their sequel at Lucasarts! Telltale Games will be releasing episodic games based on the characters.

Sam & Max Hit the Road is one of my favorite games of all time. I am thrillified down to my delicatesticles.

UPDATE! 9/16/05 1:35AM HOLY CRAP #3!
Check out 1UP’s extensive coverage of the Nintendo Revolution controller, finally revealed. I think my reaction will prove to be typical: an initial “what the holy hell” followed by gradual acceptance followed by intrigue at the possibilities. I’m sure Aric thinks it’s stupid, so I’ll let him have the first crack. Rant away, sir.
