I’m nowhere near far enough to have reached the added content (extra dungeons, trials, and ultimate weapons), but I have had the chance to sample a number of the new features in the GBA version. The ability to move at double speed in towns and dungeons is nice (it took me a moment to realize that autorun could be disabled), as is the quick save feature that lets you suspend the game while you’re away from a save point. One quibble: the battles seriously need a pause feature. I need to be able to put the game down mid-battle to go move my car so my brother doesn’t hit it while backing out of the garage without coming back to find my whole party dead at the hand of the skeletons I was fighting. Or what if you’re playing this game on your public-transit commute? Or on the bench between your field appearances as part of the Colts’ special teams? Or in between panicked calls from the International Space Station? These situations shouldn’t mean that some lowly Goblin can have his way with you. Other than that, so far, it’s great. You should totally play it. CORRECTION! I discovered last night that there is, in fact, a pause feature. Although that doesn’t explain to me why pressing start in battle didn’t seem to do anything on Monday. Anyway, now there’s really no reason not to play this fine, fine RPG classic. You do like RPGs, don’t you? Filed under: Beuks and Classic and GBA and General and Review Comments: 2 Comments |

Screenshots can be boring. GBA screenshots are always boring. Screenshots of different versions of Sudoku are spleen-rupturingly boring. That’s why we’ve spiced up these pictures of Dr. Sudoku coming out for the GBA. Here is Dr. Sudoku behind the grass knoll. Was he merely sightseeing, or were there more sinister motives at play when President Kennedy was assassinated? ![]() A little known fact is that Dr. Sudoku was beaten up by the LAPD the same day that Rodney King was. But did you here any reports about Dr. Sudoku? I don’t think so. ![]() Here is Dr. Sudoku being tossed into Boston Harbor by the Sons of Liberty. You see, the tariffs on Dr. Sudoku were just too high. America would have none of it. ![]() Did those screenshots make Dr. Sudoku look exciting? Great. Now don’t go buy it. The good folks at Gamespot have posted their nominations for their Best & Worst of 2005 awards. Take a look at this category: Best Puzzle/Rhythm Game.
Wow. That’s a high-powered group. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of those win a Best [something] award. Meteos is the runt of the litter, of course, and the one I’ve played the least, but is inventive, challenging, and well-executed. And I’ll handicap Katamari and WarioWare as being sequels that improved upon their predecessors. Setting aside the bizarre category (brings to mind the “International Brotherhood of Jazz Dancers, Pastry Chefs and Nuclear Technicians”), this is a matchup between Guitar Hero and Lumines. Two of best things to happen to video games this year. Two addictions that tend to be played in marathons rather than bursts. I’m tempted to say that both games are perfect. That sounds silly, so I could quibble: some of the songs in Guitar Hero are not as good as others, and it is derivative of Guitar Freaks; Lumines is the only really good [and legal] reason to own a PSP, and the levels are always in the same order. The achievements of these games are undiminished. I know A 47 Danger has already named Guitar Hero the best game of 2005, but I’m prepared to call the comparison of Guitar Hero and Lumines a draw. Play them both, often. You will be a happier person for it. Filed under: Beuks and GBA and General and Nintendo DS and PS2 and PSP Comments: None |

It’s the week of Thanksgiving here in the US of A. A week with a months worth of shopping packed into one day. Wait, does that sentence make sense? Meh, I’m sure it’s fine. While you’re out grabbing gifts for your kin, make certain NOT to grab this week’s prediction for worst game of the week. It’s the game that took out a full page ad in Nintendo Power, which will garner it zero extra sales. Yes, say it with me. It’s Elf Bowling 1 & 2 from Ignition Entertainment for the Game Boy Advance. It’s a Macromedia Flash game turned mobile. It’s bowling with elves. That’s right. You can finally put away…put away…whatever bowling game you have in your Game Boy Advance right now. Put that quality game away, and pick up this quality game to bowl with elves! Xmas elves! Seriously, though. Not even in a bargain bin for five dollars. Don’t touch. Leave it be. Someone else will clean up the mess, I’m sure. Filed under: A 47 Danger and GBA and Rant Comments: None |

Here’s a secret: I really want this game to come out. It’s a cartoony baseball game featuring the teams of the Japanese baseball league, including the Yomiuri Giants and the Orix Buffaloes among others. Here’s another secret: I can’t read Japanese to know if and when this game is actually going to come out. Here’s a final secret: If you’re really upset about the complete lack of excellent games for the PSP and DS, check out your local import sites for gaming. Go ahead, it’s OK. You say you want a PSP game that lets you control a subway car that rides the rails under Tokyo? It’s out there! You want to use your DS to help you pretend that you’re in a band? Do it! It’s out there! Buy a pachinko game! Buy 20 pachinko games! You can! Why not? Boy, I want that game to come out… Filed under: ClackyJ and GBA and GBM and Nintendo DS and PSP Comments: None |

My family didn’t give me any video games for Christmas (clearly they don’t understand me*), so I went out on
