The good folks at Gamespot have posted their nominations for their Best & Worst of 2005 awards. Take a look at this category: Best Puzzle/Rhythm Game.
Wow. That’s a high-powered group. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of those win a Best [something] award. Meteos is the runt of the litter, of course, and the one I’ve played the least, but is inventive, challenging, and well-executed. And I’ll handicap Katamari and WarioWare as being sequels that improved upon their predecessors. Setting aside the bizarre category (brings to mind the “International Brotherhood of Jazz Dancers, Pastry Chefs and Nuclear Technicians”), this is a matchup between Guitar Hero and Lumines. Two of best things to happen to video games this year. Two addictions that tend to be played in marathons rather than bursts. I’m tempted to say that both games are perfect. That sounds silly, so I could quibble: some of the songs in Guitar Hero are not as good as others, and it is derivative of Guitar Freaks; Lumines is the only really good [and legal] reason to own a PSP, and the levels are always in the same order. The achievements of these games are undiminished. I know A 47 Danger has already named Guitar Hero the best game of 2005, but I’m prepared to call the comparison of Guitar Hero and Lumines a draw. Play them both, often. You will be a happier person for it. Filed under: Beuks and GBA and General and Nintendo DS and PS2 and PSP Comments: None |

With every new technology comes a new way for perverts to try and have sex with it. With the phone came phone sex. Withe the internet came chatroom sex. And with the Nintendo DS, I predict there will be Animal Crossing sex. After all, it is called Animal Crossing: Wild World. Where better to act like an wild animal? For those of you who are having trouble picking up virtual ladies or guys, here are some Animal Crossing specific come on lines to get you started.

Here’s a secret: I really want this game to come out. It’s a cartoony baseball game featuring the teams of the Japanese baseball league, including the Yomiuri Giants and the Orix Buffaloes among others. Here’s another secret: I can’t read Japanese to know if and when this game is actually going to come out. Here’s a final secret: If you’re really upset about the complete lack of excellent games for the PSP and DS, check out your local import sites for gaming. Go ahead, it’s OK. You say you want a PSP game that lets you control a subway car that rides the rails under Tokyo? It’s out there! You want to use your DS to help you pretend that you’re in a band? Do it! It’s out there! Buy a pachinko game! Buy 20 pachinko games! You can! Why not? Boy, I want that game to come out… Filed under: ClackyJ and GBA and GBM and Nintendo DS and PSP Comments: None |

Future date: November 14th, 2005 The Sony PSP was found dead this morning in a dark ally. The game system was reportedly shot, stabbed, and crushed to death. Dead pixels were no longer a concern for this system as it passed into the eternal void. One suspect is being questioned. The Nintendo DS was taken into police custody shortly before press time. Police report that the Nintendo DS has no alibi for this morning, and is their prime suspect. A longtime rival of the Sony PSP, the Nintendo DS became the first handheld system to play games online against other players. Thist swift and emotionless action could have literally killed the Sony PSP, squeezing the last breath of air from it’s young body. The Sony PSP is survived by it’s wife, PS2. PS2 is expecting their first child, named PS3, early next year. Services for the Sony PSP will be held on November 19th. Please send flowers and regards to Sony Corporate Headquarters. I bought Burnout: Legends tonight. Looking forward to playing it, I popped it into my PSP. After the PSP loading screen, it said: “To start you must update the system software.” Ok, fair enough. Out to the main menu. Find the System 1.52 update. “The AC adapter is not attached. Please attach the AC adapter, and then try again.” Alright, you’re throwing up a lot of barriers, but I’ll dig it out and hook it up. “The battery is low. Please charge the battery, and then try again.” Fuck you, Sony, I’m going to play Go! Fight! Cheersquad. Filed under: Beuks and Nintendo DS and PSP and Rant Comments: None |
