On Saturday our group visited the Ginza district around lunchtime, and made a stop at the Sony building. The building has a winding showroom for their higher-end electronics, spanning several stories. One of those stories is devoted to new & upcoming Playstation 2 and PSP games, and it is there that sparklepony (hey Kim; you need a profile) and I got to try out Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy. We played a 2-player co-op level set in one hallway of a school. The controls for two take a moment to adjust to, but we found it remarkably easy to learn and to intuitively know which way we were moving our Katamari. From time to time we had to verbally coordinate our movements, like “let’s get turned around and go back,” or “make a left at the front of the room” or “ooh, we’re taking walls down now — let’s clean out the next room.” The goal is 5m, and we reached that quickly, more quickly than I expected. The level was pretty small, and wraps: if you go out the doors at one end of the hall, you come in the other. There was a side hallway too, but it was blocked by buffalo that we weren’t big enough to get past. Anyway, it was bitchin’ fun, and it looks like the game will feature more of what made the first one great. Joe and I picked up the soundtrack as well — more on that later. If you’re not going to use the Nintendo DS microphone in a unique way, don’t use it at all! Blowing into a microphone does not mean you are making full use of the DS technology! I’d love a good pinball game for the DS. Nice large double screen for a full table. Flippers on the left and right shoulder pads. That’s great. Oh, but you make use of the touch pad and the microphone, Flipper Critters? Unless the microphone is used to shake the table, I don’t want it. No more blowing into the microphone games please. My lung capacity isn’t as big as it was in high school choir. Give me a game where I record clues and notes into the microphone. Give me the ability to send messages to friends with a DS across the room or across the country. Enough of this “sound or air makes things happen” crap. You hear me? Enough. Don’t give me that pouty face. Alright, mister. It’s time out for you. You can think about what you’ve done. Filed under: A 47 Danger and Nintendo DS and Rant Comments: None |

A bit of fantastic news for the portable gamers today.
A quick overview for those who have never played Worms before. Do you remember Scorched Earth? No? What the heck? Were you born in 1990 or something? Get out of my sight. Worms is a turn based game much like Scorched Earth. You have a team of worms who take turns trying to murder other worms. This is done with machine guns, heat seeking missiles, sheep, and more. Sheep? Yeah, that’s not a typo. It is a very simple, funny, and addictive game. A quick note on myself. I love blowing up tiny creatures in games. Sims, Starcraft, Lemmings. Worms has blowing up tiny creatures in spades. Blowing up adorable little worms. Like blowing up ugly kittens. You know you’ve always wanted to do that. Of course wireless multiplayer will be included, as playing against friends has always been the focus of the Worms empire. Single player is generally pointless. There’s no time date on when these games will arrive, but I’ll keep my eyes wide open. Filed under: A 47 Danger and General and Nintendo DS and PSP Comments: 1 Comment |

With Tom Cruise jumping off the deep end, is there a better time to revive Top Gun in video game form? “There is no better time,” thinks Bill Swartzt, the head of Mastiff Games, as he takes his fifth daily bath in Listerine. Maybe he doesn’t do that or think that. But he very well could.
Uh oh. Did Bill say the Nintendo DS? This sounds like a ploy by Nintendo to me. A ploy to get people to break their tiny handheld video game systems so they’ll have to buy new ones. Why will people break their Nintendo DS? I’m glad I’m acting like you asked. Let us take a trip back in time. A trip to the NES version of Top Gun. Which was a fun flying game, if I remember anything from watching my neighbor play. You see, I never had video games as a child. So I had to mooch off my “friends.” “Friends” being kids of a similar age who lived close to you. At any rate, every so often I got my hands on that wonderful NES controller, ready to shoot down planes. Which went fairly well. Until the aircraft carrier. Nothing is more exciting than landing on an aircraft carrier! I’m so freaking happy they put that in the game! Oh, and look at that! I missed. I overshot the aircraft carrier and died. This trend would continue every single time I played the game. Why did you do this to me, video games? After the first level, for Pete’s sake! I never once landed on that damn thing. Mastiff’s game won’t be a remake, but that doesn’t mean their won’t be an aircraft carrier. Mastiff! Mastiff! It’s me, Aric! If you can hear me, please keep the aircraft carriers on the drawing board! Then take them off the drawing board and throw them in a well. Will you please fill the well in with dirt and tears? That will be fantastic. Thank you very much, Bill. Filed under: A 47 Danger and Nintendo DS and Rant Comments: 1 Comment |

Just found out about Lemmings for PSP. It’s undated as yet, but I’m pretty excited. I love those little idiots, and it’s been years (nearly a decade?) since I’ve played the game. Strange to think that DMA design, who are the folks behind Lemmings, also started a little franchise called Grand Theft Auto.
In other news, I read a headline on Gamespot today: “PS3 to sell for under $500.” Geez, I hope so, for Sony’s sake as much as my own. I don’t know that I’ll be in any hurry to get a PS3 (or an XBox 360, for that matter), but I worry about Nintendo. They’re taking a risk by catering more to nostalgia than to the males-aged-15-to-24 megademographic. It’s a risk that I applaud, because I really want to download and play Super Metroid on it, but it’s still a dangerous move for third place (2nd place in Japan). Anyway, if the PS3 is not competitively priced, it can only help Nintendo. I think that’s one of the only reasons DS is afloat right now, is the price point being $100 less than the PSP. Well, ClackyJ, sparklepony and I all just got back from a weeklong trip to Tokyo with five other people, which was excellent. We have plenty of game-related stuff to blog about. Our group came back with 2 Nintendo DSes (one red, one pink), 3 GBA games (all Japan-only Famicom Mini titles), 4 DS games, 3 game soundtrack albums, and 2 PSP games. I’ll let Joe tell you about Osu! Tatake! Ouendan (Go! Fight! Cheer Squad) and Jump Superstars. And I’m sure one of us will write about Akihabara and the arcades and The Typing of the Dead. And I know I have some choice words for the Nintendo Game Front on Odabai (the Island of Lies). But for now, I want to report on our encounters with Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy.
