The good folks at Gamespot have posted their nominations for their Best & Worst of 2005 awards. Take a look at this category: Best Puzzle/Rhythm Game.
Wow. That’s a high-powered group. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of those win a Best [something] award. Meteos is the runt of the litter, of course, and the one I’ve played the least, but is inventive, challenging, and well-executed. And I’ll handicap Katamari and WarioWare as being sequels that improved upon their predecessors. Setting aside the bizarre category (brings to mind the “International Brotherhood of Jazz Dancers, Pastry Chefs and Nuclear Technicians”), this is a matchup between Guitar Hero and Lumines. Two of best things to happen to video games this year. Two addictions that tend to be played in marathons rather than bursts. I’m tempted to say that both games are perfect. That sounds silly, so I could quibble: some of the songs in Guitar Hero are not as good as others, and it is derivative of Guitar Freaks; Lumines is the only really good [and legal] reason to own a PSP, and the levels are always in the same order. The achievements of these games are undiminished. I know A 47 Danger has already named Guitar Hero the best game of 2005, but I’m prepared to call the comparison of Guitar Hero and Lumines a draw. Play them both, often. You will be a happier person for it. Filed under: Beuks and GBA and General and Nintendo DS and PS2 and PSP Comments: None |

Here’s a secret: I really want this game to come out. It’s a cartoony baseball game featuring the teams of the Japanese baseball league, including the Yomiuri Giants and the Orix Buffaloes among others. Here’s another secret: I can’t read Japanese to know if and when this game is actually going to come out. Here’s a final secret: If you’re really upset about the complete lack of excellent games for the PSP and DS, check out your local import sites for gaming. Go ahead, it’s OK. You say you want a PSP game that lets you control a subway car that rides the rails under Tokyo? It’s out there! You want to use your DS to help you pretend that you’re in a band? Do it! It’s out there! Buy a pachinko game! Buy 20 pachinko games! You can! Why not? Boy, I want that game to come out… Filed under: ClackyJ and GBA and GBM and Nintendo DS and PSP Comments: None |

If you thought Keanu Reeves would only be stinking up your consoles with his terrible acting, you have another thing coming. Warner Bros, picking itself last in a multiformat game of softball, will finally be releasing movies on UMD. Can you feel me brimming with excitement? No? That’s because I hate UMDs. But don’t let me dissuade you from buying wooden acting on a small screen.
Speaking of wooden acting, now I can finally ask people if they have Keanu in their pocket or are they just happy to see me. I’m not going to be asking that. Filed under: A 47 Danger and PSP and Rant Comments: None |

One can only hope that this is the beginning of custom soundtracks on all PSP games. Here’s the official Rockstar GTA: LCS website. The custom station creator is in the “downloads” section. Filed under: ClackyJ and General and PSP Comments: 1 Comment |

You will believe Pac-Man can talk. That is, if you buy Pac-Man World 3. Like the past two Pac-Man World games, I’ll leave this game to collect dust on other people’s shelves. Oh yeah, back to the point. In Pac-Man World 3, Pac-Man will have a voice. Yep, the yellow fatty will actually talk. Here is some information on the wonderful things Pac-Man will say:
The only backstory should only come from vaudevillian cut scenes every 3rd level. The only character interaction should be when ghosts are eaten. Alas, science seems to have repaired Pac-Man’s vocal chords. No longer will Pac-Man have to rely on sign language. Maybe Pac-Man can talk about his feelings and how his father never hugged him. It’s not like Pac-Man talking is new. Pac-Man did talk in that 80s TV show he had. Don’t remember the 80s TV show? Here’s some info from IMDB.com:
Wow, if the new game is half as good as the 80s cartoon, we’ll have nothing to worry about! What’s that? Too much internet sarcasm? Let’s see if I can’t end on a honest to goodness happy note. At least we only have to wait until November to honor Pac-Man’s 25th anniversary with this wonderful game. No, that was sarcastic too. I give up.
