You are smart

KING! Well, ClackyJ, sparklepony and I all just got back from a weeklong trip to Tokyo with five other people, which was excellent. We have plenty of game-related stuff to blog about. Our group came back with 2 Nintendo DSes (one red, one pink), 3 GBA games (all Japan-only Famicom Mini titles), 4 DS games, 3 game soundtrack albums, and 2 PSP games. I’ll let Joe tell you about Osu! Tatake! Ouendan (Go! Fight! Cheer Squad) and Jump Superstars. And I’m sure one of us will write about Akihabara and the arcades and The Typing of the Dead. And I know I have some choice words for the Nintendo Game Front on Odabai (the Island of Lies). But for now, I want to report on our encounters with Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy.

On Saturday our group visited the Ginza district around lunchtime, and made a stop at the Sony building. The building has a winding showroom for their higher-end electronics, spanning several stories. One of those stories is devoted to new & upcoming Playstation 2 and PSP games, and it is there that sparklepony (hey Kim; you need a profile) and I got to try out Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy.

We played a 2-player co-op level set in one hallway of a school. The controls for two take a moment to adjust to, but we found it remarkably easy to learn and to intuitively know which way we were moving our Katamari. From time to time we had to verbally coordinate our movements, like “let’s get turned around and go back,” or “make a left at the front of the room” or “ooh, we’re taking walls down now — let’s clean out the next room.” The goal is 5m, and we reached that quickly, more quickly than I expected. The level was pretty small, and wraps: if you go out the doors at one end of the hall, you come in the other. There was a side hallway too, but it was blocked by buffalo that we weren’t big enough to get past.

Anyway, it was bitchin’ fun, and it looks like the game will feature more of what made the first one great. Joe and I picked up the soundtrack as well — more on that later.

Death Jr

The crap train keeps on rolling for the PSP. Sub-sub-par 3rd person platformer Death Jr. comes out this week. Don’t worry about getting your copy at the local GameStop. You can have the one I won’t be buying.

The PSP seems to have hit their downward slump very quickly. It’s like a scene from a zombie movie. The hero is throwing everything they can find at the zombie, but nothing seems to stop it. We’re getting so many games that are just lame, it’s like the developers are looking for something they hope will hit.

Coded Arms, Dead to Rights, Smart Bomb, Rengoku. Where are our good games? Lumines? Yeah, I bought that a long time ago. What else do you have for me?

Is there seriously nothing good coming out until Burnout Legends at the end of September? Let’s look at the release dates.

Hmmm, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, UMD, game, UMD, UMD… I’m starting to see a pattern here.

The DS will finally be hitting their stride this fall, delivering many anticipated games including Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. I see the PSP slipping behind. It’s a much better system, but the games aren’t there. That’s a weird thing to say about a Sony system, isn’t it?

Short Circuit

Short Circuit is on UMD? You have to be kidding. Was there a petition signed and delivered to Imagine Entertainment? Why is this here?

Short Circuit is great. At least it was 17 years ago when I would watch my VHS copy of it every single day.

But in a world where the second season of Twin Peaks is locked in DVD limbo, a kids movie from 1986 starring Steve Guttenberg does not belong on a specialized proprietary disc.

If a Blondie concert video comes out on UMD, I think I’ll have to shoot myself.

Worms

A bit of fantastic news for the portable gamers today.

THQ Inc. today announced an agreement with critically acclaimed development studio Team17 Software Ltd. to publish Worms on the PSP portable entertainment system and Nintendo DS.

A quick overview for those who have never played Worms before. Do you remember Scorched Earth? No? What the heck? Were you born in 1990 or something? Get out of my sight.

Worms is a turn based game much like Scorched Earth. You have a team of worms who take turns trying to murder other worms. This is done with machine guns, heat seeking missiles, sheep, and more. Sheep? Yeah, that’s not a typo.

It is a very simple, funny, and addictive game.

A quick note on myself. I love blowing up tiny creatures in games. Sims, Starcraft, Lemmings. Worms has blowing up tiny creatures in spades. Blowing up adorable little worms. Like blowing up ugly kittens. You know you’ve always wanted to do that.

Of course wireless multiplayer will be included, as playing against friends has always been the focus of the Worms empire. Single player is generally pointless.

There’s no time date on when these games will arrive, but I’ll keep my eyes wide open.

PSP not just for the discerning gamer

Daddy Day Care

UMDs. Let’s talk about them. Watching movies on the PSP is fantastic. There is something about that tiny screen that makes the movies seem so crisp and clean. The colors so bright and vibrant. The widescreen so perfect.

Would anyone pay more than $5 for a UMD? I guess so. Would I pay $30 for Kill Bill when I could get it for $15 on DVD? No. No I would not. Why would you ask me that? That’s ridiculous!

But people are buying UMDs. I want to shake them hard. “Do you see what you’ve done,” I would scream at them. I will rub their nose in a UMD copy of Daddy Day Care. “First off, you made this thing exists. Second off, you made it cost $15,” I’d explain to them in my loudest outside voice possible.

The PSP is a fantastic system and I love that movies are available for it. These prices are outrageous though! I’m not getting 5.1 surround sound. I’m not getting a high definition display. So why would I pay Best Buy in gold bricks for a UMD of a move I already own?

This is about supply and demand. We can’t take this crap! We can’t go out and buy just anything! Think of your fellow PSP owners! If we all hold out, they won’t be able to charge these outrageous prices.

If I had to take a guess, I’d imagine that the people buying these UMDs are the same people that buy games without reading the reviews. “Suckers” as I’ve come to call them. If I was a carnival worked, I might call them a “rube.” I am not a carnival worker.

They buy Simpsons Skateboarding because of the title, lap up every fighting game even though the controls sucks, and purchase Daddy Day Care for $15 so they can watch it as they fall asleep on their waterbed.

This is a call to action. If you see someone at a store picking up a UMD, slap it out of their hands. Their grip may be tight, so you might need to give their wrists a little karate chop. Don’t feel bad, it’s for their own good. You’re doing them a service. Hell, you’re doing a service to the country. And if you need to, search their home without a warrant. For America. Tie them to a tree, collect their UMDs, and make them watch as you burn them one by one. It may be harsh, but they’ll understand in time. It’s all about the greater good. You are a good person.
