Gamefly: why NOT to use them
Posted on 08.23.07 by skintari @ 1:33 pm

Hey-o fellow readers,

I come here to provide you all on the extreme ineptness of one online entrepreneur: our friend, Gamefly.

What do I have against Gamefly? Well, for starters, their customer service. But before I get into that, let me describe the past 3 months of my Gamefly service.

The first month went rather well, I would get the games that were available in my queue, also receiving the first game I requested even though it was unlikely to ship. Hmm, since I was new, I had priority over everyone else I suppose. Yay me, or so I thought.

Fast forward about a month/month and a half. I notice that I’m getting games that are ranked in the bottom tier of my queue. Now, I know their rules about availability of games, but they were legitimately skipping over stuff that was listed as Now. Not just one or two spots, but it skipped over 5 that were ready to go, per their online system. How do I know this, I started making a spreadsheet to track how screwed over I was getting. All the while, a Referee who shall remain nameless was able to get the new releases as they came out. No doubt that person will have problems in the very near future.

Anyhoo, onto the other issue…Customer Service. Here is my initial email to them:

“Hello,
I’m giving the benefit of August 9th as the return date, however, I believe I mailed the game back earlier that week.

I also have a few complaints about the Gamefly service…

1. The games that are sent to me are generally from the middle or bottom part of my queue. It seems like there is no effort at all to send me any games I that I want “now”. I’ve reordered my queue in hopes of getting games that are coming out or recently released and this has proven futile. And I know that this isn’t because these newer games have medium or low availability as I’ve personally kept track of how many currently available releases have been skipped over to get me something that was 26th in line. Not to mention the fact that I referred somebody and they were able to get a game (the darkness)at the same time I was given the 15th choice in my queue.

2. Fast Return. Why does this not work all the time? It seems like once a month I have games that are applicable for the Fast Return Program. I am seriously getting the feeling that because I rent a higher volume of games, I’m being penalized for it. I find that absurd and a poor business model. If it’s not a constant offer, then it shouldn’t be offered at all. Or is it just a selective service that you offer users once a month?

3. I’ve only been a member for a few months and I really hoped that this would be a great experience. But so far, this has been a huge disappointment. I’m still hanging hope that this may change in the future.”

What’s their response? Nothing. Just an auto response that tells me how to claim a game as not received by them. Whoop-te-do. That doesn’t answer all of my questions. So what do I do now?

“Dear Gamefly,

Since you failed to respond to my last email within the 24 to 48 hour response time, I feel it’s only fair that you cancel my account.

Poor customer service is no excuse and I will be passing the word that Gamefly really doesn’t care about consumer questions or concerns.

Thanks for a disappointing experience.”

Yeah. I’m quitting my Gamefly. As of today. Ain’t no Netflix, that’s for sure….

It’s a DVD! It’s a game! It’s just bad!
Posted on 07.24.07 by skintari @ 8:06 am

tr_dvd.jpgBeing a gaming site and dealing with gaming things, I figured this would be an opportunity to tell you about a game I recently rented from Netflix. I know! Netflix has games?

Well, this isn’t entirely true. See, I got the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider DVD game. It’s billed as a game for your dvd player and that’s exactly what it is. Tomb Raider for yet another platform.

Now the game isn’t bad if your a hardcore, gotta have everything that is even remotely related to TR. The controller is the dvd remote and it functions as well as one would think. You get to a gate and a menu pops up for your next move. You push the corresponding arrow and yay, you’re in! Although I found that common sense would let you finish this movie-game with ease, it is a pretty neat concept.

I think we may have a new genre of games on our hands if they can get some of those games that are like a choose-your-own-adventure types. Dragons Lair, anyone?

Anyways, I’ll give this a rating of 2/5 only because my disk froze after the first chapter!

Things I Learned from the Microsoft E3 Presentation
Posted on 07.10.07 by A 47 Danger @ 10:48 pm

Peter Moore is tone deaf, and probably sings loudly in the car by himself.

Viva Pinata is being brought back in a terrible party game form.

Mass Effect comes out this November. That’s one of those months that ends in “ember.” The thirst one.

We’ve spent billions of dollars on our Xbox 360s. I wonder if that was before or after the Ring of Death repair refunds.

Haven’t been excited about any games I wasn’t aware of. Assassin’s Creed, Rock Band, Bioshock, and some smaller games.

SceneIt?, the board game, coming to Xbox Live? It comes with a new controller style. A controller with a big red button. You know, in case you can only play games by using your nose. It always knows.

Somehow, I have been tricked into watching a PowerPoint presentation.

Hey, it’s Reggie Bush! From the New Orleans Saints! That’s what the gamers want! The crowd is really impressed, as you can tell by my sarcasm.

The Xbox Live presentation is boring me. 7 million members. Oooh, and he mentioned Pac-Man: Championship Edition. Bad call, dude.

Oooh. Hexic 2 is coming. I think I’m the only person who played the first one. But, hooray for me.

OMG Golden Axe OMG! What’s more, Golden Axe is available tonight! Quit playing it on your Dreamcast or Wii and start playing it on XBLA!

Disney movies on Xbox Live? Right now? I’ll start ignoring those movies right away!

PGR4 will have motorbikes and weather effects. I will remember this as the moment all of my dreams finally came true!

Lost Odyssey doesn’t look bad. In fact, I find it hard to say bad things about it. Hold on, the dialogue is cheesy. There you go! Thought I was loosing my touch for a second.

Wait, there is a Games for Windows section? Viva Pinata and Gears of War are coming to Games for Windows. So for the two people out there who like playing Xbox 360 games much later and on PC, there you go.

Call of Duty 4 looks pretty good. Then again, it is another war shooter. A MODERN war shooter. From the distant future of today!

Hey, thanks for showing us the Grand Theft Auto 4 trailer again. We haven’t seen that a million times before.

Resident Evil 5? I didn’t know about that!

While Assassin’s Creed still looks great, it still looks the same as it did a year ago. But the AI looks great! In a group of enemies, only one will attack at a time! Brilliant!

There is a Halo themed console? Come on now. Haven’t we learned that this doesn’t work yet? I’m not going to sell my white console for a green console. At least the Halo 3 preview was neat. And that’s it. Go to sleep.

Dear Nintendo,
Posted on 07.02.07 by beuks @ 10:16 am

super_metroid.jpgI just sent this email to Nintendo via their web form:

Hello,

I just wanted to let you, as a company, know that I have 800 Wii Store points waiting for the release of Super Metroid on Virtual Console. I’m not asking for a release date — I know better than that — but I thought that you should know that there is money ready and set aside to be taken from me by Nintendo of America. You can even include it in your projected earnings if you want: $8 of nearly-pure profit. I wish I had that kind of financial security.

Sincerely,
Fred
Minneapolis, MN

That oughta do it. Seriously, though. They released Super Mario Bros 2 this morning. That’s cool and all — it’s a great game — but it’d be nice if they hit more of the classic games that haven’t yet been re-released on Game Boy Advance. ActRaiser was a great step a few weeks ago. But Zeldas 1, 2 and A Link to the Past, all the NES Super Mario games, and Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island are all available in portable form. Super Metroid has never been repackaged, and was just named the #10 game of all time by Edge Magazine. Where’s the love?

Incidentally, the #2 game on that list, Resident Evil 4, has just been re-released on the Wii. Some reviewers (Gamespot among them) are calling it the best version of the game. That’s pretty sweet. And the game’s cheap. So get it if you haven’t played it. If you can find it — I can’t. But I am looking for a new Wii game after having finished Twilight Princess on Saturday. The final boss battle was epic, and did a fantastic part of drawing on skills learned throughout the entire game, including, oddly enough, your cattle-herding skills. Awesome.

That’s all I got.

Halo 3 and the Fall of the Geek
Posted on 06.22.07 by A 47 Danger @ 2:04 pm

Halo 3 ARG

I give up. Not only am I a video game geek, but I’m a geek geek. There is no hiding it any more.

More specifically, I’ve become a Halo geek. Sure, I’ve played Halo my fair share of Halo 2. Who hasn’t? But it has gone beyond that.

The first nail in the glass coffin was the Halo 3 ARG that just started. The “alternate reality game” is a long and involved community game that will bring players deeper in the Halo story through interaction.

Fine, that’s still in the realm of games. Video games, at that. That doesn’t bring my geek factor up to radioactive levels.

Oh, but what’s this on my credit card statement? It looks like someone who is me purchased a copy of The Fall Of Reach, the first Halo novel. Should I say that again? Halo novel.

And what’s worse? I’m enjoying it. Instead of watching TV while sipping the remaining milk from my breakfast bowl, I’m reading The Fall Of Reach.

It’s the great depression of my coolness stock market. If you purchased shares in my hip and with-it-ness, you are now bankrupt. I apologize.

But, as long as we’re here, anyone want to talk Halo? Anybody? Echo?
